Novo Hopovo Monastery in honor of St. Nicholas is a male monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The first written mention of the Novo Hopovo monastery dates back to 1451. The church in honor of St. Nicholas was built in Novo Hopovo in 1575-1576 and painted in 1608 and 1654 by Greek craftsmen from Mount Athos. The Turks burned down the church in 1688 during the retreat, but a year later it was rebuilt, and in 1693-1695 it was completely restored. Since the 16th century, there has been a seminary in the monastery, and monks have taught reading and writing to all Serbian pilgrims who want to learn. Since the beginning of the 18th century, a painting school operated in Novo Hopovo, there was a rich library and treasury, the monastery occupied a large territory and had 4 mills. But during the First World War, the monastery was abandoned. Novo Hopovo Monastery was revived in 1920 by invited nuns of the Lesninsky monastery from Bessarabia, led by Abbess Ekaterina (in the world Countess Yefimovskaya). Russian Russian orphans were educated by the nuns, and they supported the spiritual and cultural life of the Russian emigration. The monastery was severely damaged during World War II, the bell tower and some monastic premises were blown up, 19 out of 61 icons remained in the iconostasis. In 1985, a new iconostasis was created, and in 1998 a new bell tower was built. Since 2005, Novo Hopovo Monastery has become a men's monastery again. Not far from the Novo Hopovo monastery, the reconstruction of the Staro Hopovo Monastery, which was founded in the XV century, but was destroyed during the Second World War and was abandoned, is underway.
