The church is called St. George's Palace (Palazzo), as part of the imperial palace of the Roman Empire was located on this site. Milan, then the Mediolanum was the main city in the north and even for some time since the end of the third century AD was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The palace was huge, it occupied a significant part of the city. The Church of St. George occupies only a fragment of it, but nevertheless, the name of the temple reflected the fact that there was an imperial palace in Milan. By the way, it connected to the racetrack. It was the same story in Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. In this church, there is a plaque on the wall on the left, not far from the altar. It says that it was in this palace and in this city that the famous Edict of Milan appeared in 313, when Emperor Constantine the Great (later to become a saint) made Christianity the official religion. In addition, the church also has paintings by Bernardino Luini, a famous Renaissance artist, a follower of Leonardo's traditions, and an interesting and talented painter. There are many of his works in local museums. Luini is a big name for Milan. And admiring his work is very valuable.
