The bronze statue of Archangel Michael on the roof of the castle was erected to commemorate the end of the plague in the 18th century. Since then, it has been the Castle of the Holy Angel. The castle was the residence of the Popes. But before that, it was Hadrian's mausoleum. But he's not there. After the capture of the fortress by the Goths, a century ago, from the moment the statue was erected, the emperor's ashes were scattered, and everything else was plundered. This is the first thing that comes across on the way to the Vatican. Nicely. The views from the castle roof are not bad. It is one of the highest places of Rome in ancient times.

Castel Sant'Angelo (ital. Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as The Mausoleum of Hadrian is a Roman architectural monument, a cylindrical building in the Adriano Park on the banks of the Tiber. Sometimes called A sad Castle.  History It was originally built by order of the Roman emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum, as well as as a tomb for other emperors, the last of whom was buried by Caracalla.  In the 3rd century, under Emperor Aurelian, the mausoleum was incorporated into the system of urban fortifications, turning into a bastion of the Aurelian wall.  In the 6th century, during the wars with the Goths, the castle was first used as a full-fledged fortress.  In the 14th century, the building was completely rebuilt, turning the former mausoleum and fortress into a full-fledged castle.  The castle has been a national museum since 1901.
