Another landmark of Freedom Square is the city hall. It was built after the Polish king and Prince of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Alexander endowed Minsk residents with Magdeburg rights. The charter allowed the city to establish its own self-government body (magistrate) and build a town hall for it. Minsk residents received the right to private ownership of land, the opportunity to pay a single tax and create craft associations — workshops.
