Review of the play "King Lear" (Oyun Atölyesi / 19. Istanbul Tiyatro Festivali) We watched the play "King Lear" (Kral Lear), presented as part of the 19th Istanbul Theater Festival, in an online format. Despite the remote viewing format, the production made a strong impression and allowed us to fully feel the scale of the tragedy. Director Cengiz Devechi offers a non-standard interpretation of the classics, rejecting the external pathos and focusing on the internal disintegration of personality and power. The minimalism of the set design enhances perception: attention is completely focused on acting and psychological stress. Even through the screen, the precision of the director's decisions and the depth of the scenes are especially felt. Working with light and space creates an expressive atmosphere that is well read in the video version of the performance. The acting ensemble deserves special attention. Okan Yalobyk demonstrates a deep and multi-layered game: his character undergoes a complex transformation, and this is felt even when viewed online. Plasticity, pauses and emotional accents make the image convincing and lively. The video format also allows you to take a closer look at the details: facial expressions, intonation, and working with pauses — something that is not always so clearly perceived in the audience. From a technical point of view, the production makes a strong impression: — the light acts as a key expressive tool — the text sounds modern, while maintaining the poetry of the original — the dynamics hold the attention throughout the performance Bottom line: Even in the online format, "King Lear" remains a powerful and profound theatrical statement that makes you think and take a fresh look at a classic work. The game we watched, "Animal Farm", shed a very beautiful light on the events we are experiencing these days.
