On June 25, 2017, on the day of the 1043rd anniversary of Vitebsk, a new sculpture appeared in the city - a monument to old man Hottabych. The monument was erected at the entrance to the Lyalka Theater, the actors of which took part in the opening ceremony. The author of the bronze Hottabych is Vitebsk artist, sculptor and designer Sergey Sotnikov. Hottabych's appearance in Vitebsk is not accidental - it was here in 1903 that his "parent" Lazar Lagin was born (the pseudonym "Lagin" is derived from Lazar GINzburg, the writer's real name). His family lived not far from the monument's installation site, on Podvinskaya Street (now Tolstoy Street).

Old man Hottabych and the magic lamp are one of the most unusual and memorable sculptures in Vitebsk. As a gift to Vitebsk and the residents of the city on its 1043rd anniversary, a sculpture of old man Hottabych holding a man with a camel in his hands was installed near the building of the Belarusian Lyalka Theater. Its height is 1.8 meters. The magical hero hovers on a magic carpet near the place where the author of the famous fairy tale once lived.  Lazar Lagin (the pseudonym was formed from the fusion of the first syllables of his real name and surname – Lazar Ginzburg) was born in Vitebsk in 1903 and lived on Podvinskaya Street, later renamed Tolstoy. Now the hero of his fairy tale story, translated into 15 languages of the world, fulfills the wishes of all who touch the magic lamp.
