From the monastery, built in the IX century, only two temples remain – Surb Arakelots (Temple of the Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Temple of the Virgin). The buildings of the churches were built of solid black tuff stones, hence, it is believed, the name of the monastery "Sevanavank" — "Black Monastery".The island (and now the peninsula) with the Black Monastery were repeatedly raided by the enemy: Arabs, hordes of Tamerlane, Persians, etc. Two black temples of Sevan stand deserted, like two guardians of this ancient lake. And in front of them stretches the blue of the sky /sea. The landscape around is fascinating: mountains surround the lake from all sides, snow-capped peaks can be seen disappearing over the horizon.
