There is an opinion that earlier in 53-55 the Apostle Simon the Zealot, or as he is also called Simon the Canaanite, lived and prayed here. He came to the Caucasian lands to help the local people abandon paganism and become true Christians. In 55, the martyr was brutally murdered, according to one version, by Roman legionaries, according to another - by envoys of the Georgian king Aderki. The path to the cell begins from the place of death, goes through the New Athos waterfall and a small lake. Also on the way to the grotto there are several shrines that are worth paying attention to - a spring with holy water, ablution in which will save you from all ailments and diseases, as well as a stone boulder with the footprint of Simon Kananite, near which all the priests stop. In 1884, the grotto was illuminated with holy water. The interior of the cave cell has been preserved since the time of the prayers of the Holy Martyr in it, but the entrance to the grotto was cut by the monks after his death. All the trails of these places are picturesque and worth visiting, despite your attitude to religion.

A very amazing place, visited on 07/20.21. How Simon Kananit lived here is just a mystery! And the path to his grotto, and the atmosphere here is simply amazing. Since there was a service, there was no opportunity to take pictures, come after 20:00, otherwise there are a lot of people. But what struck me was the passage: 200 rubles for an adult, 100 rubles for a student. What's the money for?
